WONDERING IF YOU COULD USE AI TO PLAN YOUR YORUBA TRADITIONAL WEDDING LOOK?

If you have ever searched “Yoruba traditional wedding outfit ideas” on Pinterest or Instagram, you already know how it goes. You start with one picture and then another and another and before you know it, you have 300 saved posts, five different colour combinations, seven gele styles and absolutely no idea what you actually want to wear and your tailor is already asking, “Aunty, what style are we doing?” 😭

This is where AI can actually be your friend. No, AI cannot replace your tailor, stylist, gele artist or makeup artist but it can help you organise all those ideas in your head and turn them into an actual direction.

Here are a few ways you can use it.

1. Start with the look you want

Before you start asking AI questions, think about the kind of bride you want to be.
Do you want to look very traditional? Do you want something modern? Soft and feminine? Or are you the “if I’m doing it, I’m doing it BIG” kind of bride? Tell AI.

For example, you can type:

“I’m having a Yoruba traditional wedding. I want to look elegant, feminine and luxurious, but I don’t want my outfit to be too dramatic. I love fitted styles and statement gele. Give me three bridal look ideas that fit this style.”

The more information you give it, the better. Tell it your colours. Your fabric. What you like. What you don’t like. If you hate puffy sleeves, say it. If you don’t want your outfit to be too revealing, say it. If you want to look like money without looking like you’re trying too hard, please say that too 😂

2. Don’t know what colours to combine? Ask AI

This one can save you plenty headache. Maybe you’ve picked your Aso Oke but you’re not sure what colour your blouse should be or you have chosen wine and gold but you’re wondering if adding champagne will be too much. Instead of guessing, ask AI to give you options.

You can say:

“My Aso Oke is wine and gold. Suggest three colour combinations for my blouse, gele, jewellery and shoes. I want the overall look to feel elegant and expensive, not too busy.” Now you have different directions to consider. You don’t have to use everything AI suggests. The point is to give yourself options before you start buying things. Because we don’t want to reach wedding week and realise that your gele, shoes, jewellery and outfit are all fighting for attention 😂

3. Use AI to figure out your gele

Let’s be honest, Gele can make or break the look. You can have the most beautiful outfit, but if the gele is not giving what it needs to give, something will just be missing. So tell AI what you’re wearing and ask it for gele ideas.

You can ask:

“I’m wearing a simple champagne and wine Yoruba bridal outfit with gold accessories. What gele styles would complement the look without making it too busy?”

You can even ask for different options simple, classic and dramatic then show the ideas to your gele artist. Of course, your gele artist will still know what works best with your face and the actual fabric you’re using. AI is giving you the direction. Your vendor is bringing it to life.

4. What is the groom wearing?

Because some of you will plan your entire look and then remember your groom two weeks to the wedding 😂 If you’ve already chosen your colours, you can use AI to figure out how your husband’s outfit can complement yours.

For example:

“I am wearing wine and gold Aso Oke. Give me three Yoruba groom outfit ideas that will complement her look without being an exact match.”

This is especially useful if you want your pictures to look coordinated without both of you looking like you’re wearing the same outfit. You can also ask AI what colours, accessories or details can tie both looks together.

5. You can use AI to create a moodboard

This is one of our favourite ways to use it. Instead of having your inspiration scattered across Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok and your WhatsApp saved messages, put everything together.
Tell AI the mood you want. The colours, the outfit, the type of bride you want to look like then ask it to help you create a visual direction. Something like:

“Create a visual direction for a modern Yoruba traditional bride. The colour palette is wine, champagne and gold. I want the look to feel elegant, regal and feminine. Include ideas for the outfit, Aso Oke, gele, jewellery, shoes and groom styling.”

Now you have something you can use when speaking to your vendors. Your tailor understands the outfit direction. Your makeup artist understands the beauty direction. Your gele artist understands the kind of gele you’re going for. Everybody is working from the same idea.

6. And yes, you can use AI to try different looks

This is where it gets really fun. Maybe you’re stuck between two outfit styles. Try both. Maybe you’re not sure if you want a dramatic gele or something more understated. Try both. Maybe you want to see what your colours could look like together before you start ordering fabrics. Try it. You can use an AI image generator to visualise different ideas. Just don’t forget that AI-generated images are not always realistic. That sleeve might look amazing in the picture but your tailor may look at it and say,

“Madam, how do you want me to sew this one?” 😂 So use the image for inspiration, not as a technical blueprint.

7. Give AI your budget too

Yes, you can even do this. If you have a specific amount you’re working with, tell AI.

For example:

“My budget for my Yoruba traditional wedding look is ₦500,000. I need to cover my outfit, accessories, shoes and gele. Help me decide where to spend more and where I can save.”

It can help you prioritise. Maybe your outfit is the most important thing to you, so you spend more there and keep your accessories simple or maybe you already have your outfit sorted and want to splurge on your gele and jewellery at least you’re making the decision intentionally.

8. One more thing: don’t let AI turn you into somebody else

This is very important. Just because AI can generate a beautiful bridal look doesn’t mean you should wear it. Your wedding look should still feel like you. If you love simple things, don’t suddenly choose an enormous gele because it looks good online. If you love colour, don’t force yourself into an all- neutral look because that is what is trending and please don’t copy another bride from head to toe. Take inspiration, mix things up but make it yours.

Because when you look back at your traditional wedding pictures ten years from now, you don’t want to think, “Ah, this was the trend that year.” You want to look at yourself and think: “I looked so good and this was so me” and honestly, that’s the goal.

Use AI to get ideas.
Use it to organise your thoughts.
Use it to explore different looks before spending your money.
But let your vendors use their expertise to make the final decisions because AI can help you plan the look but you’re still the one getting married.

Final Thoughts

Planning your traditional wedding look doesn’t have to mean opening 15 different Pinterest boards and still being confused about what you want.
AI can help you narrow things down, try different ideas, play around with colours and even give you a better idea of how you want everything to come together but don’t forget that AI is just a tool.

Take the ideas you love, show them to your tailor, stylist, gele artist and makeup artist, and let them tell you what will actually work and most importantly, don’t get carried away trying to recreate every beautiful Yoruba bride/groom you see online. Your traditional wedding look should still feel like you because when all the planning is over and you finally see those pictures, the best compliment won’t be that you looked like somebody else. It will be: “This bride looked GOOD” and yes, you should absolutely use AI to help you get there.
